During my Pre-PCT trip planning, I reduced some weight a number of ways, and
have still managed to hang-onto what I think are clothing necessities. They
included: Cutting my lexan spoon and toothbrush in half and drilling-out
the handles. Drilled-out the plastic camp trowel handle (but only bring it
on trips where I don't bring an ice axe). Removed all the leather lash
patches on the pack that I never used (not much of an issue now, as most are
plastic or replaced with webbing). Reduced all webbing lengths on everything
to a length that I thought would be adequate with anyload. Ditched all
packaging of store-bought food. Removed three tools from my Swiss Army Knife
(wish they made one with just the tools one wanted). I wore out a great
limited production 1.5 man tent on the PCT. Now that I'm married, we're
carrying a T.N.F. Westwind (more weight and these tunnel tents are a drag
for extended trips, I miss the side entrance of my old modified half-dome).
I carried a standard 35mm SLR on the PCT. We now carry a 35mm instamatic,
but I hate the picture quality. The camera seems like an area where a great
sacrifice occurs at reducing weight. Does Olympus still make a small 35mm
SLR with changeable lenses? I carried a pair of Peter Carmen/Choinard Super
Gaitors on the trip. Although they helped keep my feet toasty, I'll now
resort to just a standard style of gaitor.
