As far as hiking on a budget-I read Jan Deeds book about her hike of the
AT and she mentioned a hiker named Freight Train.
You guessed it! He arrived on a freight train with no visible means of
support and no equipment. When he needed to go to
town to resupply the Train was his prefered means of transportation. He
had found his pack and a blanket in a dumpster. Trail clothes were beyond
his budget, but not to fear, Hikers discard extra clothes along the trail
and freight trains' wardrobe soon was complete. Hiker boxes and
sympathetic day hikers provided sufficient food.
As his means of transportation to and from the trail was rather
unreliable-He had to wait until the rail police were looking the other
way to board-He didn't keep up with the group and it is unknown if he
actually finished the trail.(bail money was hard to come by) But he did
hike a substantial part of it and sure didn't spend any money!
