[pct-l] Looking for Yaktrax crampons feedback...

Last year on a spring ascent in the San Gorgonio Range, I decided to tray
out a pair of CMI instep crampons. We traversed and climbed numerous show
chutes, the rest of the group had crampons and laughed at me when I pulled
out the insteps. I did bring my crampons in case I needed to any front
pointing, but the insteps worked wonderfully on everything we did on that
trip. In fact, the rest of last spring I left the crampons at home.
The insteps with straps weight in at 8.5 oz. I just checked the CMI website
(http://www.cmi-gear.com/) and they have a new product called the Ice Cleat,
looks like it weights less then 4 oz and cost is $9.30. I ordered a pair! I
would not cross off camber icy mountainous trails without something, and
these look like they will do the trick. I will update with the results after
a field test.

Yaktrax aren't crampons, they are traction devices. Big difference. While
they work great on very low angle icy slopes, the fact that they don't have
any teeth(or points) means they won't bite into the steeper slopes or into
softer snow. Personally I would never use them for mountaineering or in
place of crampons. They have there place just not on High Sierra Passes.
