[pct-l] Getting off the trail between Idyllwild and Cabazon?

Monica,
There are no easy ways between Idlywild and Cabazon .....since you are in the middle of Wilderness, state park and NF. The only exit might be Black Rock Rd (many did this to avoid the snow on Fuller Ridge in 05). This still would be a hitch from the main road 243 to Rt 10 TO PS.
In Cabazon -Rt 10 is a 6 lane major highway (thus a tough but not an impossible hitch) and there are a few trail angels in the area who might be able to give you a lift. The phone is one exit West, I believe. Rt 10 is the connection between anywhere West and PS.
The PCT does not go to the Tram but you could take an alternative route from Saddle Junction to get to the tram 12- 16 miles. From the bottom of the tram, you'd still need to negotiate a ride to the train station - which should not be that difficult.

Idlywild is a very friendly town and if you ask around I am sure someone who commutes to PS could hook you up with a ride - doubt there is anything but expensive taxi service from IdWild.

Hope this helps - you have a lot of options but all you would have to rely on others.

  Hi all,

I am starting a PCT section hike at the end of April (hopefully sections A
and B), and will (sadly!) need to leave the trail after about 10 days to two
weeks. Can anyone recommend a way out somewhere between Idylwild and
Cabazon? If possible, I'd like to do this without hitching, as I've heard
Cabazon is a tough hitch. For instance, are there any public transportation
or bus options from Idylwild? Does the PCT pass by the Palm Springs
Tramway? Or, if I get to I-10, how can I get to Palm Springs? My goal is
to get to Palm Springs, so I can hop on a train and head back home...

Any ideas appreciated. Looking forward to meeting many of you at the KO!

Thanks,
Monica
