I don't know about variable gravity, but gravity has increased since the
1970's. This is not man made (such as from thousands of footprints
compressing the soil), but rather the result of the spin of the earth
pushing the mantle of the earth against its crust, increasing the density of
the earth's surface. This has severe ramifications for hikers. For example,
it is now much harder to climb a steep pass than 30 years ago. Perhaps the
most convincing evidence of increasing global gravity is that the surface of
the earth is much denser than it used to be, requiring hikers to carry
thicker sleeping pads.
