My son and I did the Glacier Peak detour on our Flip-Flop of the PCT
this year.
The Napeequa Valley was my favorite place on the whole trail--amazingly
beautiful. We did it on June 23rd, including the three fords (Chiwawa
River, Napeequa and Boulder Creek) and about 5600 ft of elevation gain,
which is similar to what we did on at least one day in the Sierras in
September. photo at http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=105757
As always, conditions on the streams/rivers (especially the glacier fed
Napeequa) vary widely by year, month, day and time of day. We had no
trouble with the fords at the time of day and place we chose to ford.
Who knows what next year will bring!
We had been told the detour was similar to the John Muir Trail in
character and now that I've been on the JMT, I suppose it is true.
