I spent 10 days on the AT in Aug-Sept, a few weeks back, and constantly used
my poles with straps -- the correct way as described by Girl Scout -- and
never had a problem hiking from dawn until dusk daily. In fact, I would say
that on those rough trails it enhanced my ability to move faster over the
rocky trails. When I needed to use my hand for something, I simply let go of
the poles, which dangled from my wrist on the straps until I could grab them
again. Definitely the way to go. - Swifty.
