[pct-l] Re: scariest sound

We get coyote serenades pretty much nightly around here; sounds very similar, but not exactly the same. The thing that strikes me is that it's a single animal, which seems uncharacteristic for coyotes. I believe they've re-introduced wolves to Yellowstone, haven't they? They're more solitary. I'm curious if that could be what it is.

The coyotes don't frighten me (except as regards the cat and smaller dogs), but wolves were a real threat to humans back in the day. So, there may be something deeply instinctive about the fear you felt, if this hairbrained theory of mine is true.

Hey, Christine started the "what's that question?" game today . . . how about "name that animal!"??

This is definetly not the most scared I have been (pretty big coward
here), but I was alone in the Southwest corner of Yellowstone just off a
place called Bechler Meadows. Camped in a patch of lodgepole pine just off
the trail. Woke up in the middle of the night to this god awful noise in
the distance. For ten minutes it kepted getting closer and closer. Turned
on my video camera and recorded it as it passed by my tent following the
trail.

I don't know what animals exactly were involved, wolf, elk, deer, moose,
You tell me.
