There was nothing wrong with 1977.....that's the point. 
We can't do anything about the hiking window. It's just there. We can do
something about the number of people using that window, though.....

Hey, what is so wrong with 1977??  We made it without the internet, trail
angels, water caches, ultra-light gear, town guides, etc.  And it was a
great experience.

If the Thru-hikers didn't have the support of non-thru hikers, it'd be 1977
all over again and less people would be able to thru-hike!
