[pct-l] ice axe for So Cal?

Good afternoon, all,

One renown hike-writer, and all-around grand high omnipotent guru of thru
hiking, says in his first book, "Summarily, most hikers would consider
carrying an ice axe the entire tri-state distance." Maybe the "most
hikers" to which he refers includes mall-walkers, Aunt Tilly & Uncle Fred in
the city park, and day-hikers on a river walk; but it doesn't seem to
include us. And no, regardless of some innuendo to the contrary, I did not
have to use my axe when the last ice-age glaciers receded.
