[pct-l] elevation sickness

A word of warning though -- I have seen people get sick just from coming up from the Owens Valley up to the Portal (which is appx. 8,000'), before they ever start up the mountain via the trail. The rapid gain in elevation afforded by driving up there just does some folks in.

I believe the 1000 feet per day rule applies to where you sleep. In
other words, if you start the day at 9000 you can climb to 11000, but
you should return to 10000 to make camp. Of course breaking this rule
is something you can get away with more easily at these elevations
than at 17000 feet. Otherwise hundreds of people would die every year
day hiking Whitney from the portal.
