[pct-l] hat mylar

Good evening,

I think a Mylar covering would be an effective addition to a hat if a person
weren't concerned about missing the ET communications. I've been using
something much less glamorous ... and conspicuous ... for a few years. I
generally wear one of several different light weight, broad-brimmed, fabric
hats. To increase their insulating value in heat or cold, I cut a 4.5" x
11.0" piece of the 0.12" thick closed-cell 'poly foam, and wrap it fore &
aft inside the top of the hat with its ends tucked between the covering and
the sweat band. The stuff is used as parcel packaging, and is usually
discarded. It is dazzling white to reflect the sun as well as insulate. It
also makes a slightly flat surface for the top of the hat which tends to
keep the rain from soaking through in the center, and it keeps the hat from
getting that stupid, rumpled look regardless of how they look in the REI
catalog. One of my foam inserts weighs 2.46 g. (0.087 oz.) so it is not
exactly a burden.

Is it mission-critical? Nah, not a chance, but it is a convenience, and a
new one can be tucked into each resupply box. Best of all, it achieves the
triple-crown gear rating: It's good, it's light, and it's cheap.
