[pct-l] shoes.

in 2004, i started at the border with some merrell
helium ventilators. they are pretty meshy, lightweight
shoes, but i was still stunned at how fast they fell
apart. by idyllwild (180 miles) they were in tatters,
and i made it to agua dulce (450 miles) with them
wrapped in duct tape for the last 150 miles or so.
another hiker had the same, and had even worse
problems. i can't recommend them.

after that, i used three pairs of nb806s, and was very
happy with them, other than the shoelaces breaking
relatively often, and the toe bumper (or whatever it's
called) always peeling away from the shoe after a
while.

i have also used vasque velocity shoes (in fact they
are sitting in the corner of my work cubicle right now
- barefoot is the only way to go!) and i'm am VERY
pleased with them. i did the tahoe rim trail (170
miles) in them, fresh out of the box, and they felt
great. pretty burly shoes, nice tread, fit great. love
them.

peace.

dt.
