[pct-l] Trail snacks
Good morning, Matt,
You are on the right track using oats as a basis for food bars. Instead of
crushing relative expensive Cheerios, try making oat flour in the blender
from cheap rolled oats. The result will be the same, except the Cheerios
has more additives, etc. I use the resulting oat flour alone, or in
combination with whole wheat flour, for most of the
bars/cakes/cookies/crackers that I make. I just prefer the flavor of the
oats. In baked goods, oat flour will not really rise and get light and
puffy like wheat flour products, but I prefer a more flat, solid product for
its durability and density.
Out of many attempts, I have yet to find an energy bar recipe of which I can
be proud. Some of my projects were OK and others were mildly wretched. The
various hikers' cookbooks usually have a selection of recipes. Lately I
have just been making an oat-flour variation of the old standby hardtack
crackers, then I eat them with whatever dip or spread I have at hand.
Eat up ....

Has anyone had success making fod bars for themselves? If so are there any
recipes you would reccommend? I was thinking of making something out of
crushed cheerios. The Cheerios are very nutritious and light but they are
exceedingly bulky. I would guess that by crushing them and making them into
a food bar one might circumvent this problem. Any ideas?
Peace and Love,
Matt
