[pct-l] How much fuel to pack?

I did some testing at home, then on one of the pre-trips in May 2004

http://www.geocities.com/pct_2005/walker.html

and found that you need about 2X as much as you would with white Gas, if that helps.

This was predictable, since other PCT-l people said about 2 oz , instead of 1 oz if you were switching off of white Gas. On a slight side note, I calculated the cross over point, where white gas and or Alcohol becomes more efficient. If you had the simmer light (MSR) vs the Pepsi can stove, the break even point for one person is about 7 days, above 7 days, use white gas, or the other fuels of your choice. Pepsi can stove is better for shorter trips. I should also add estibit to the mix, it beats all for weight, but I would also note, that at $.50 a tablet, is also the most expensive.

God Bless.

Folks,I have recently made the switch to the alcohol coke can stove and I amtrying to get a feeling for how much fuel to pack (ounces/day?). While Irealize that many folks vary their frequency in stove usage, I was hoping toget some dialog from those experienced with the PCT and JMT. My JMT planfor this summer calls for three re-supplies (TM, Red's Meadows, Muir TR). Iam looking at 7 days between Muir TR and Whitney Portal.I understand from journals that it is fairly easy to get fuel along the way,but this section will be limited in places to pick-up additional fuel. I amplanning to carry the ISO-Heat.Many thanks for any input,Jeff
