Marge, I just leave mine off unless I need to call someone. No one can call
me, because it's not on, and I disabled voice mail too! I promise to call
during a wide period of time (between sunrise Wednesday and sunset Friday -
don't worry until Friday).

If the phone is off most of the time, the battery should last a while. I
suppose shelf life could be a problem, but you could bounce a few cell
batteries along, charging them on overnight town stops.
