Your kids may worry even more when they call you and call you but you don't call back because you didn't get their message, since you won't have a signal until you reach the proximity of an urban area.

I am really a novice at all these things, music etc and cell phones.  I
think I am suppose to carry a cell phone in case of emergency (kids worry)
However I think I would use my phone card at every opportunity and it
appears there is a pay phone at most places you resupply.

What I do not know is how do people recharge their phones.  It must mean
taking along the charger, that part I got and it looks much heavier than the
phone.  But you need to plug it in someplace and wait. Also is your phone
turned to the off position until you really need to use it?  How long will a
phone turned off hold its charge?  What exactly is the procedure for using
the cell phone on a long hike. Incidentally I do have venison.
