[pct-l] Technology on the Trail

I agree completely with Mark's post. Ansel Adams is known as a great nature
photographer. But his real inovations were in the dark room. Most of his
actual photographs were taken early in his career. But when he learned how
to enhance the printing process, that made his works sell. Adams would
probably be a wizard with photo editing software. =)

I wonder how many of us still use the sun to tell time, and how many have
advanced to that technology know as a clock. Even more recently to the
digital clock. It seems like these new technology tools are just more tools
to help us enjoy the outdoors. I don't think anyone wants to watch their GPS
during a walk in the wilderness. But when they get to a point where they
need help, the GPS can be a great tool to "find" a lost trail.

Whose to say these people would have left technology behind? If Ansel Adams
was 30 years old today he might be carrying an 11 mega-pixel camera and a
laptop to store his pictures. John Muir might be carrying a palm pilot for
taking notes and a gps for marking where a herd of goats were.

It's easy to look back and assume that these legendary people who fit our
romantic ideals would be the same if alive today, but who's to say? Heck, if
alive today Muir might have become a lawyer.

technology into the wilderness with them.
