Because the P.O. in Stehekin has no phone, I called the Chelan P.O., which
supplies their mail by boat, for info on the Stehekin P.O. hours next
summer. They didn't know and, asking among the clerks, made some guesses.
Since it was less than definite, I wrote the Postmaster in Stehekin and just
received the following info from Al White, the PM there.
>From May 15th through Sept 30th, the Stehekin P.O. is open 6 days a week,
except holidays. Hours are 8 am to 4:30 pm weekdays and 10:45 to 12:45 on
Saturdays. After Oct. 1st, it will not be open on Saturdays and, while
still open weekdays, will receive mail only on Mon, Weds and Fri.
"A package will be held up to 30 days if the request to do so is written on
the package, e.g., 'Hold for PCT hiker until _____, Expected arrival date is
______. There is no charge for mail held more than 15 days. Please do not
have your mailer send packages too early as my storage capacity is nearly
non-existent."
He mentioned that the Williams Bus Service will operate the shuttle from
town to the Stehekin Valley Ranch. He had no idea whether by the end of
next summer the bus would be able to reach the PCT at High Bridge.
He also said that the small outdoor shop in Stehekin is "now closed."
