[pct-l] DEET - where?

I disagree. Headnets made with no-see-um netting are great. I use the OR Spring Ring Headnet, which is on sale right now at Campmor for $3.97 (down from $8.99). The no-see-um netting keeps ALL bugs away, and the ring keeps the headnet off your face. The ring is an important part of a headnet. I wouldn't use one without a ring.

I've only ever hiked with my headnet on two times. But in mosquito country, I put it on at every break. Mosquitos are way worse north of Whitney than they are south of Whitney. They are especially bad north of Tuolumne.

And please, please, please carry DEET. It's the only way to not lose your mind.

I'm a mosquito magnet. While I didn't need too much deet in the southern
section of the trail, I did use it occasionally. What I needed more was a
mosquito headnet. The gnats were horrible at times and if you use hiking
poles, trying to swat at them can get downright dangerous. ;-)

A headnet made of noseeum netting is overkill and much too warm to wear.
Find one designed for mosquitos - the holes are bigger and allow much more
ventilation but still allows you to keep hiking without regard for the
gnats.

I can't compare the southern section to the morth northerly areas. I got
off the trail just before Whitney.
