I day hiked Whiting Ranch above Orange County. Mountain Bikers rule the
trails there. I'm cool with that. The park allows it and there are WAY
more bikers than hikers. AND I've found the average mountain biker at
Whiting to be respectful, considerate and friendly (two, in particular,
come to mind: a couple of EXTREMELY hot-babes....hoo-boy!) anyway. I
digress...
The point being (yes there is one...damn those two gals were cuties!),
the trail ruts are wide, deep "V's" with blackened sides where the tires
rub across. And at some of the more treacherous turns, blood smears and
stains mixed in with the tread marks! These mountain bikers are hard
core! It was cool watching them fly down the trails. Only saw a couple
of spills, but they were spectacular crashes!
Wanna see what "non-motorized" bicycles can do to a trail? Hike Whiting
Ranch. You just might get to meet those two hotties too!

Kraig,
It's not just a single, thin tread of tire creating the erosion. You
know as well as I do that there is an awful lot braking and sliding on
rapid descents. That causes major erosion! And then there is just the
attendant lack of concern for this effect when you know it is happening
but you want to preserve your rights. I went mountain biking in the
Lagunas one time and felt pretty bad knowing how much erosion that one
descent caused. Never again in a semi-pristine area. I don't care if it
is allowed, I won't do
it-- it scars the landscape. Land boarding, too. Don't get me started
with that...
