Ken,
That was my experience as well. When I did the CT this
past year, all the mtn bikers were very friendly and
did not notice excessive wear on the tread. One group
even gave me food! Much of the recent CT tread (esp.
near the Denver metro area) was designed from the
ground up for mutli-use. It shows.
The PCT was NOT designed for MTB. As such, it can't
handle the bikes as easily it seems. The area around
Downieville (Sierra City) was esp. bad! I remember
chomping on a graonla bar, almost getting run over by
a speeding bicyclist, and then having this biker get
mad at me because I was in his way!!!!!!!!! Grrrr...
