>>>Any advice out there on how to get home at the end of the hike? I'd like to have a plane ticket, but I'd also like to buy it before it is really really expensive (i.e. well before I finish the hike). On top of that, I don't want to have a ticket go unused if I have to bail out on the hike. Any suggestions for getting home quickly and inexpensively?

Quickly and inexpensively likely means flying. I'm sure you're already aware that you cannot fly with some hiking/camping items. If time wasn't an issue, I'd recommend the Dirty Dog. I took the Greyhound from Boulder to start my hike in 2002 and it made my hike seem like an absolute walk in the park, which of course, it actually is. 'Bus time' is hell on Earth, no doubt.
