Just to chuck an additional filter into the whole debate, one we can get in
the UK that I've never seen mentioned on any US websites is the premac
Pocket travel well. Only 2oz, a proper filter (inc iodine resin to kill the
virii). I've used its big brother, the 6oz trekker travel well, in alaska
for 3 weeks with no problems.
However, It pumps VERY slowly. Like 200ml/minute. Still, for an emergency
filter for that really murky cow infested water, it is pretty light. I
suspect many people end up with an AM kit weighing more than it does.

Personally, we use a Katadyn mini. Light, well made, but a bit slow.
PS Also planning to hike in 2005. Starting mid april coz I like snow more
than heat, but hope to get back and see people at the kickoff.
