There are a number of backpacking clubs in Southern Cal. 

The PCT Section is an informal group of Pacific Crest Trail section hikers
in the San Diego area. Through quarterly meetings and an email list, we
provide a way to meet other PCT section hikers and get on the trail.
Unfortunately, it's been inactive for some time. Email me direct for info.

and lots of other options.

The difficulty I've seen in keeping groups active is having common goals and
the members being close enough together to actually get out on the trail
together.

Another option is to check or post on the bulletin boards at REI, A16, etc.
