Next season I'm hiking Crater lake north to Manning, and also section F.......Maybe more. My permit for the entire season is free. I'm commiting to 500+ miles.
Free permit and permit info http://pcta.org/planning/before_trip/permits/general.asp .
I don't have to stick to my estimated schedule and nothing happens if I hike one mile or 3000. No one ever asks. Who could?
In the 1800 miles I hiked this year, only one ranger asked for a permit, that was in King's Canyon. We hiked with Roxanne about 10 or 15 miles. (she said thru-hikers were not required to carry bear canisters in her section). The ranger at Crater Lake was real cool. She never asked for a permit anyway.
Maybe you want to hike a few more miles so you qualify.
Unsolicitad information:
Hyatt Lake is a very logical place to camp. The BLM campground is, no exageration, the nicest and cleanest campground I have ever stayed at. Big trees, right on the lake, bathrooms with free hot showers.................real clean tile bathrooms. All the spaces are clean level beds of pine needles. The water is as good as it gets. The camp host, retired forestry department, loves thru-hikers. He even offered me free firewood . Expensive.
With a thru-hiker permit.........................$2.00
The OLD PCT
as opposed to the new. I can't see why they even put the new one in. I'd rather be near lakes and trees than thirsty in downtown Modesto.
Crater Lake? $18.00 to camp or over $100.00 for a room. There's camping within a couple of miles on the trail for free. The store accepts package, so you don't have to hitch four miles up the hill to the post office if you don't need to ship out. Coin-op showers and laundry right there at the store. The people in the store, the post office, and the All-You-Can-Eat Buffet are incredibly nice. Again, camping is $18.00 plus a campground employee stole a couple of tents and my trap and treking poles. One guy (a hunter with weapons) got his stuff back. I paid $100.00(a room) to get out of the rain that night. $250.00 to replace the equipment. $150 for the train home..............$518.00 to camp there. This is where I got off the trail.
Maybe I'll see you on the trail.
