BearVault has a fix for this at

I emailed them and they sent me a bottle of the silicone lube (it's a liquid
and not a grease). Just a thin film and I haven't had a problem since.

refund. Several times during my 32 day hike I could not open the Bear Vault
and
it turns out that I am not the only hiker to have problems. Probably because
I
am weak in the arms after long hiking days and lacking the necessary
co-ordination and strength to open the Bear Vault. After all I am only a
puny
147 lb 57 year old.  I contacted Bear Vault who said a silicone grease
application to the thread will fix the problem, it's worth a try.
