[pct-l] Arriving into USA this Sunday !

Both Marshall and Mike are right - and the directions I provided were in
response to Philip's query about "downtown," thinking that Philip might
already have worked out a plan to get to the Union Station vicinity from the
airport (which is possible, although it involves at least 3 transfers, using
a shuttle bus from the airport, then the L.A. Metro subway & light rail
systems - the Green Line to the Blue Line to the Red Line to Union Station.
I've done this, and it's actually a great trip through LA's more diverse
neighborhoods. There's substantial security presence on the light rail, and
if one's not time-pressured, it's an entertaining ride).

This said, I think that Philip would be much better off staying in a
motel/hotel on the West Side - i.e. perhaps the Radisson in Culver City,
which is near a Trader Joe's on Sepulveda, and reasonably close to the
Adventure 16 (imho, better than REI or Sport Chalet for technical gear)
store. I've had experience at the Radisson (took the #@$%!!!! Calif Bar
exam there, and resupplied myself with dinners from Trader Joe's ;-) !)
They've got a shuttle to the airport, I think. From there one could easily
arrange a taxi to Union Station, as well as a rental car for the day.

Philip, let us know what you think. I live within reasonable driving
distance from downtown Lost Angeles, and can help if you get stuck. If you
email me off list, I'll send you my phone number. If you're in the Sydney
area, contact Phil Preston at philp@cse.unsw.edu.au and ask him about me -
he thru-hiked the PCT in 2002, and stayed with us for a couple of nights; we
assisted him with resupply.

Good idea. But, isn't West LA nearer the airport than downtown and probably
easier to get to? Why go east then west then east again (like the PCT?). So,
I'd go there first. Then take public transport to Union Station. Aren't
there other stores even closer to the airport?
