I have used the pepsi can stove now extensively, and I defy those who
say they only use ONE oz, to boil water, or more importantly cook a
meal. I have found REALISTICALLY It takes TWO oz per heat up or meal,
considering evaporation, wind etc., and that is a big difference. ONE oz
is two tablespoons of fuel. Try it yourself, and see what you conclude.
You have to plan wisely on fuel. For long hauls, say 7 to 10 days on a
weight to weight ratio, the new MSR windpro stove with propane fuel
cannister will beat the pepsi can stove set up in TOTAL weight. That's
because specific heat of alcohol compared to propane is one half. It
takes twice the weight of alcohol to get the same heat out compared to
propane. Also the windpro has a beautiful valve you can use to easily
throttle to simmer. I get 12 uses out of the smallest propane canister,
and many of those uses are 20 minutes each. One oz of alcohol, if you
are lucky, will burn 10 min.
I now use the pepsi can stove as a backup stove and carry 4 oz of
alcohol total.
Let's try a little test at zero day on cooking with only ONE oz of
alcohol, love to see it work.
