Mary had some very good info...  also check TRT website (if you haven't
already) at http://www.tahoerimtrail.org/trail_page.htm for other ideas
for backpacking the TRT for a 'few days'...  

Tahoe area has many other outdoor 'day' opportunities as well...  climb
Mt. Rose - view Reno, Incline area, and Tahoe; climb Mt. Tallac (and if
you only climb one peak, this may be the most rewarding) - view
Tahoe/Emerald Bay, Fallen Leaf, South Lake Tahoe, and Desolation
backcountry; Emerald Bay/Eagle Falls/Vikingsholm area; the Forest
Service Visitors Center near Fallen Leaf; Donner Memorial, old Donner
Pass highway, Donner Summit short hikes; Carson Pass area; climb Freel
Peak (no trail)...  really is too many possibilities for exploration in
a short time - and that is a big reason why so many people fall in love
with Tahoe and the surrounding area...
