An ice axe carried as a walking stick is a great intimidating tool also and 
not outside of the necessary gear list.   I don't own a gun, however, I pity 
the poor soul who breaks into my house.  I'll wager he's never seen a mad man 
like me swinging an ice axe!

A friend works too, preferably a large one. ;-)
