[pct-l] Plan B
If it were me, I would stick to your original plans and hike north. Yes, you
will feel the altitude, but probably only the first week. So, you go slow.
Stay an extra day at Kennedy Meadows. Stay an extra day at Crabtree Meadows
before going up Mt. Whitney. You should be fine. You will then be with the
other thru hikers, experience the snow on the passes, and the streams. Kind
of exciting.
When we did the PCT in 2000, we got off and went to Portland for a week. We
definitely felt it until Forrester. But, much depends on age and recovery
time. There were many younger folks heading off trail for 1-2 weeks and then
charging right back on with no problems.
If you still want to go south in June, I hope others have answers. My guess
would be: start at Castella (Castle Craig, not too far from Ashland) and go
south.
