As several people have mentioned, giant sequoias
do not live near the PCT.
The best grove is Redwood Mountain, followed in
some order by Giant Forest, Grant Grove, Mariposa
Grove, Calaveras Big Trees... all around the 6000'
elevation range far west of the HIGH Sierra.
The Tuolumne Grove that is "near" Tuolumne Meadows
is not in the same league.
So like many other scenic wonders of California,
best seen on a separate trip.
If I came from far away for a once in a lifetime
visit to California, I might be tempted to
do my other California tourism as a break between
the time I arrived at Kennedy Meadows and until
July 4 weekend was over; then resume refreshed
and reinvigorated to fly through the remaining
snow and subsiding floods and waxing mosquitos
and bears; the midpoint of the through hikers are
at Donner Pass by then. The question in one's
mind might be whether the R&R away from the trail
would be beneficial enough to enable one to catch
up and get past Stehekin before too much of it
shuts down at the end of September.
But if one wanted to hike over to the sequoias
one could take the High Sierra Trail from
Mt Whitney "directly" to Giant Forest.
"Directly" ignoring elevation changes.
Cedar Grove isn't near any sequoias but I suppose
that somebody good at hitching could get a ride
up to Grant Grove easily enough.
