[pct-l] Why Hike Solo

Years ago, I did a few overnight backpacks with friends where we split
into two groups and hiked opposite ways on the same trail. A couple of
suggestions:

1. Each party carry a set of keys to both vehicles. Even though you are
both hiking the same trail, this doesn't guarantee you will actually
meet. One party could be off the trail at the time the other passes or
just take a slight different route.

2. Rendezvous before the hike and exchange vehicles. It is easier to
rendezvous heading out than going home. Each party can have a designated
person to inform when they are off the trail. As I recall, little can be
done at the end of a day if one is overdue, especially when this is not
determined until several hours after the expected end of the hike. Will
probably be dark by then and Search and Rescue will not go out until
next day. Another advantage is that after the hike each party can just
drive on home.
