Another plus of hiking alone is the ability to see more wildlife. I hiked the AT a number of years ago and I was often with others. But I only only recall seeing wildlife when I was alone. Since then I've hiked sections of the PCT alone and have have found it almost comforting. . However, unlike the AT, there are sections on the PCT where you may not see another person for a day,  especially north the northern Sierra.
