[pct-l] hex screws for traction
I followed everything until the epoxy to make them permanent. That means
needing to take 2 pair of hiking shoes because there are many stretches
without snow and ice. Is that what you are suggesting. Basically, it is on
just the passes where traction may be needed (except for in the Goat Rocks
below Old Snowy).

>> How about trying Flyin Brian's technique, (Brian Robinson) using the
sheet metal type screws on the bottom of your shoe. Take along a small tool
for putting them in and out. They go in from the inside and then put your
insole over them. He used them with Great success during his triple crown
year. Maybe Roy or Brian will come on line and describe the 'how too'.
It is really easy. Rather than put them in from the inside, do it from the
bottom. The head of the hex screw, not the point, gives you traction. This
will be in the 3rd edition of Fixing Your Feet in the new section on snow
and ice.
Sheet Metal Hex Screws can be used in the soles of your shoes to get better
traction. This is a cheap and easy way to modify your shoes or boot to be
safe in snow and ice. Use to ten to eighteen 3/8" screws in the lugs of your
shoes soles. Put them around the edges of your shoes with several at the
toes and heels. Be careful if your shoes have an air or gel insert. Use a
ratchet screwdriver or a drill with a 1/4" socket to make the job easier.
Dipping the screws into epoxy before screwing them into the shoes will help
them stay in place.
