REI sells a unit like this that clips onto your pack as opposed to being
worn on the wrist - I personally don't care for anything strapped on my
wrist. I just checked their website, and I believe the current model is
the Highgear Altitech II for $150. I must have the earlier version, as I
seem to recall paying $100, and it is slightly different. Mine weighs
1.9 oz, and I've been well pleased with it. The compass is somewhat
funky in that it doesn't come on and stay on, rather it comes on long
enough to get you properly oriented, then cuts out. I'm sure this is for
battery life - keeping the compass on continuously is pretty power
intensive.
