[pct-l] maps

Hi Steve,

Tom Harrison puts out some fantastic maps -- shaded relief, in color, coated, with mileage.... I don't think he has a map-pack for the whole PCT (he mainly covers CA), but I used his map-pack for the JMT and found it invaluable. It would have cost me a bundle to buy the comparable area in USGS topos, and I would have been carrying around lots of extra paper. The amount of land shown is narrowed, of course, but never to the point of one wrong turn and you're off the map.

I haven't seen maps in guidebooks of this quality -- they always seem to be at a scale that requires a magnifying glass to read, and even then aren't very sharp (and for some bizarre reason, I have a hard time tearing maps out of books, so maybe I'm just making excuses...?). Anyway, the backs of his maps are blank, too, which I found useful in jotting down trail notes at days' end -- different from my journal where I put all the juicy stuff!

REI carries his maps, but you can also buy direct

I ordered over the internet and got my maps within a week, and this was during the height of summer. So if you don't find maps that cover your whole thru-hike, you might want to consider these for the CA section....

Good luck!
Janet
