with all this talk of hitch hiking i feel i need to share my hitch hiking
karma story with the pct-l (even though it happened in colorado)...
while hiking the colorado trail in late august of 2001, heading back to
kenosha pass from my first resupply in the one store town of jefferson in
south park, i found myself standing on the side of the road thumbing a ride
back up to the pass. cars were whizzing by at 70mph and intermittent
thunder storms were blowing through. i was a bit anxious to get a ride
before it really started raining. i soon got a ride from a long haired
blond heavy metal looking gentleman. he was heading to denver for one thing
or another. i recall he had some impressive tattoos that were noticeable
because he was wearing a tank top. so we got to talking. i told him what i
was doing. he asked where i was from. when i said NY he remarked he was
also from NY, about 50 miles south of where i am now typing this from. he
dropped me off and i went on with my hike, finished the CT, got my old job
back, worked for 4 months, then went on a winter vacation before heading
back east before heading out to CA to hike the PCT.
on the way back to colorado springs, i was driving thru the town of alma
when i see a person thumbing a ride on the side of the road. i pull over to
give him a ride and also to let the uptight drivers who had been tailgating
me all the way down the pass by. i figured he was just heading up to the
next town of fairplay. so when he is in my car and we start driving the
conversation of course goes to "where are you from". "NY". "me too". i
look at him, he has long blond hair. "hey, do you have tattoos?". "damn, i
picked YOU up hitching back in august" he said. i told him briefly of my CT
hike and my up coming one on the PCT and dropped him off.
perhaps there is no moral to this story, maybe the moral is "what goes
around comes around", regardless with all this discussion of hitch hiking i
thought i'd share this story of hitch hiking karma with the list.
