The PO can't take anything unless it has postage on it. I've even tried to
leave postcards for hikers who were behind me and I had to put a stamp on
the card---even though I was leaving it at the place where I was standing.
I've known hikers to do what you're thinking of---leaving their boxes at the
PO to pick up later. You have to pay postage, but at least you can pay the
cheapest possible rates. Parcel post, I think. It's crazy, but since
September 11th, the Post Offices are very picky on the rules.
What towns are you thinking of dropping your boxes at? I may be able to
direct you to local businesses or motels that might hold your box. Keep in
mind, that it's always good PR to give the business/hotel a small holding
fee.
