Take the road north of Fresno to Lake Thomas Edison, take the boat or walk
the 4.5 miles to the end of the lake, hike up Mono Creek. Near its head, on the
north side, is the Pioneer Basin. There's a trail into it. To the south
are the first through 3rd Mono Recesses..no trails into the first two tho.
Marvelous Country. A good loop might be up the Third Recess. The trail ends high
up, but a well marked, easy, cross country pass ( Gabbott Pass) between Mts
Abbaott and Gabb lead to Lake Italy, where one could go down to the PCT, over
Bear Ridge and back to Lake Thomas Edison. Another nice loop would be 7 miles
to Silver pass, down to Cascade Creek, west to the Goodale Pass Trail and back
to Lake Thomas Edison. In terms of scenic interest, I would rate them in the
order I mentioned them.
