Sad but true, there are cables on the Whitney Trail. There is a section of
over engineered trail above Trail Camp made by blasting out a route
along the rock. A short portion of this has had cables installed. This was
probably necessary to prevent folks from going off the ledge that had
been created with the blasting. Water tends to seep through and over
the rocks here then freeze overnight. Slipping over the ledge would
probably not be a good thing. Still, the cables are a distraction; as are
the poured concrete steps at other points on the trail. Things have
changed quite a bit in 30 years. It is a real circus during the summer
months on this over used trail. Permits, reservations, hordes of people,
traffic jams, etc., etc.. Part of what we get in our effort to provide access
to all. Good news is the mountaineering route has not changed much
over the years and you will probably have it to yourself.

I haven't been on the trail from Whitney Portal to Trail Crest in nearly 30
years (yikes!)--but are there really cables there?

> up, either. Very dangerous. To some, these snow fields may be.
