[pct-l] Rattlesnakes

Here in Australia we have several venemous snakes like rattlers.
Here the main thing is to avoid being bitten by wearing sensible clothing
and shoes and being on alert. Most snakes will avoid hikers at all costs.
Please don't use a razor or venom extractor, as this is likely to enable
the venom to directly enter the bloodstream. Often a bite does not puncture
effectively and venom is on the skin surface. With a razor you are also
likely to increase the shock.
Here we apply a pressure bandage over the bite and try to immobilise the
person and treat for shock, then if others are present we send for help.
Walking out is a last resort certainly not until the effects are
experienced, it may be that the bite has only injected a small amount of
venom. For a solo walker an emergency beacon or mobile phone can be used to
call help. Anti veneme treatment may also require identification of the
snake but don't try to kill it as it will really bite if you do this. (they
move incredibly fast when threatened)
I understand why he rang his wife but why did the rattler victim ring work?
