I used a PocketMail device on my thru-hike.  The
device has its ups and downs.  There are some phones
that it does not work on for some reason.  I would try
multiple times and wouldn't be able to get my messages
sent.  When I do the PCT again I will most likely not
carry one.  You figure there are only a handful of
people you really want to be intouch with anyway.  It
also adds another thing you have to deal with while in
town.  I found myself getting mad at this device when
it didn't work instead of enjoying the town or the
people around me.  Weight is 8 oz.  This is still alot
for something that can only be used in town.  Maybe
the newer lightweight cell phones are a better deal.
You pay your monthly payment, but can use it whenever
you choose.  Also after the hike it just becomes a
fancy roladex.

Can't wait for summer.
