First, thanks for the water and fruit stash on Hat
Creek Rim. I still remember leaning back on your lawn
chair, in the shade, eating cold grapes. I would have
renamed myself Lawn Chair Larry, but for the story of
same in the Darwin Awards book.
My trail name didn't originate on a trail, but I used
it anyway. It did come from someone else. One adopts
their trail name when they introduce themselves with
the name. It can seem odd at first.
I'm playing in a steel tip dart tournament in the
Silver Club Casino in Reno, Nevada. It's the
semi-finals, against quality opponents. After
throwing two darts, I need the center (double)
bullseye on my last dart to win. In rhythm, just as I
am about to release my third dart, the power fails,
and the room goes totally dark. Fifteen or so seconds
later, the lights come back on, and I'm still at the
line, holding my dart, blinking. I hit the double
bull, a miracle.
When the PA announcer, my friend Dave Wilson, called
the finals, in his best World Wrestling Federation
voice, he said: "In the finals, on board # 1, from
Morgan Hill, California, Lights Out Larry." I could
never top that.
