The true maximum depends on a lot of things. A single day race  with lots
of rest afterwards will be one thing, a race where you have to go day after
day is another.

Ultra long distance races have been around for a very long time. Often the
goal was to go as far as you could in a set time, not to see how fast you
could go a set distance.

In the years 1860-1903 (the Pedestrian Age) - walking was the leading sport
in Europe and America. This was the age of the "6 day race" and distance of
500+ miles were what it took to win.

and 1300 Mile races
