[pct-l] sun shade ideas, please

In 1994, my husband Chuck (Igor) fashioned shades from auto-windshield shade
spring steel and nylon fabric. These were attached to the tops of our Dana
packs and looked like an elongated brim of an old-fashioned sun bonnet.

They lasted less than a week - I hated mine (tunnel vision, and it snagged
on overhanging chaparral - and we also looked like space aliens) and Chuck
soon agreed. They went home at Mt. Laguna.

I like Flyin' Brian's solution - just wet the bandanna, put the baseball cap
(preferably also light-colored nylon) over it and you're set. It's
certainly worked for me. When gnats are a problem, just put the bandanna
over your nose and face burglar-style to keep the bugs out.

Incidentally, the reason shade from trees and shrubbery is cooler than any
shade produced by an umbrella is that the plants are actively transpiring
water vapor, which consumes heat through evaporation in the immediate
vicinity of the plant.
