At the ALDHA gathering this fall, Brian Robinson gave a talk about how
to hike 30 miles per day. Almost all his "tricks" involved minimizing
the
time that he was standing still.

When he came to a fork in the trail and he wasn't sure which way to go
he would take his best guess and continue walking while he examined the
map and/or compass. If he decided he made a mistake, he would backtrack
and take the correct route. He ended up saving more time by taking an
educated guess than stopping and digging out the map at every
questionable
junction (at least that was his feeling about it).
