My experience with silk was different.

I bought a couple of silk shirts back in the 70's when they first became
reasonably priced. I think they came from Early Winters and/or REI.  They soaked
up sweat like cotton and were *slow* to dry. As others have noted -- they were
also fragile and developed runs. I switched to using a cotton/poly long sleeve
shirt, mostly poly, and that worked far better. Durable, reasonably fast drying,
and rugged.
