[pct-l] Dana Designs Javelina

For those of you that reside in the Northwest corner of the country you know
the name G.I.Joes. Last year I purchased a "Joe's Outdoor" 2 man tent for
$80.00. It weights in at a few ounces over 4lbs, (can't remember exactly)
It has a large mesh top panel for star gazing and moisture control. It also
has two large mesh no see-um doors (one on each side), a rain fly and 3 clip
on poles, (2 for the tent and one for the rain fly). It goes up in under
two minutes and down in about the same when needed. Is comfortable (roomy
33.6 sq/ft) for one person plus your gear, or two people and some of your
gear. I used this tent a total of twelve nights last year while
backpacking, and while spending a week hiking in Washington, near Randle
Wa., in the Goat Rocks Wilderness area and Mt. Rainier. It kept me dry
during some hard rain storms and proved to be one of the best purchases I've
made this past year updating my gear. Compare that to the REI Dome2 and
almost half the price.

Scottie
(Three Lungs)
Some individuals in my hiking club swear that I have three lungs because I
hike up hill about as fast as I hike on level ground.

Son came home with a new pack yesterday. A coleman internal frame at is
4,500 cu.in. and cost 75.00. ( Pack weight is claimed to be 3lbs. even.
Actually in looks about as well made as any in the 150.00 price range. ( No
,
it isn't as good as a MountainSmith , but the price is right!!!) Great
distance pack for the hiker on a budget, or with 9 kids to buy shoes and
books for, or for the hiker who's hiking budget is now going to pay a
tuition
at some University of higher knowledge!!! ( Seems like the people making
packs these days are finally starting to get the picture that hikers are now

going with lighter gear) Fred Meyer and Cosco may soon be battling it out
for
Backpacker Mags " Store of the Year" award.......

Just to add my 2 cents,

I love llamas. There is a llama farm about .5 mile from my house and I
frequently walk over there and watch those lovely creatures.

I think they are decent trail animals. I followed some hiking in Section P
and they seemed to have little impact on the trail. Also their scat was not

bothersome in the warm weather. I would love to do a trip with some llama
someday, so keep the information coming!

Hubby is getting off the trail at Walker Pass for a bit. I found the
following information, which could probably be worked backwards for those
wanting to get to the trail at Walker Pass:

Taxi:

>From Ridgecrest, 760-371-4222 (not 24/7) (thx to previous post)
There are taxi firms in Lancaster -- they charge $60-80 to go to Mojave,
which is 30 miles, so figure from there.

BUS, via Kern County Transit to Greyhound station in Bakersfield:

There is NO bus service AT ALL through Walker Pass. If you can get to Onyx
(to the West) or Inyokern or Ridgecrest (to the East), you can catch a bus.

Note that the Inyokern & Ridgecrest bus runs only Mon/Wed/Fri.

I just came across this tent. Check out:
http://www.northernmountain.com/pgi-Product%20Spec?511101

It is a 3 lb., 5 oz. tent that looks like it could hold you and all of your
gear but probably not 2 people. It uses your trekking poles and is on sale
for $99.

Interesting,

I purchased mine from Lynne Whelden. Pretty quick shipping and good
service. He'll sell you a custom length unmodified if you request it.

Looks like Strider's grandchildren will be planning ADZ for New Years Day:

There could be water caches needed at Evolution Creek by then.

I wonder if
global warming may have something to do with why the pine forests in section
G
aren't regenerating after forest fires, as mentioned in the guide book.

Thanks to Ron and Marshall for the info. Re-watching the tape, I did pick up
on the teaching profession comment. At 2 hrs 20 mins, this tape requires
several viewings to fully digest.

Best quote: (Ray quoting Jack Fair, doing a perfect impression) "You know
the only freedom we have left in this country is which pant leg you put on
first."

Best theatrical moment: Ray imitating a train conductor blowing his whistle
as he passes through Tehachapi at midnight, spitefully attempting to wake up
motel-bound PCT hikers.What a hoot.

- blisterfree

>> Bret,

As Marshall mentioned, Ray's primary vocation is in teaching. He is also
very involved with the local theater group. He was president of the group
when we were hiking together. They bought the land and built the theater
that he is doing his talk in. The group puts on a number of presentations
ranging from dramas to musicals each season. They had just done Dracula
before Ray came out to hike with me in 2001. Ray frequently directs, acts
or reworks scripts as needed. <<
